Slag cement looks identical in every silo and performs very differently depending on who ground it, how fine, and from what. A supplier who cannot answer the questions below quickly is selling you a truck, not a material. Here are the questions, our answers, and how we supply across Texas.

Ask for the TxDOT producer code and the plant location on the certificate. A reseller who will not say is a reseller who does not know. Hasten supplies Houston-ground material and names the code up front.
ASTM C989 Grade 100 or 120, with the activity index on the certificate. Grade claims without a certificate are marketing.
Percent retained on the No. 325 sieve. Reactivity lives in the grind. Good slag runs 1 to 3 percent retained. A coarse import can run far higher and still be called Grade 100 on a good day.
Sulfate in the slag matters on coastal, below-grade and sulfate-soil work. It should be on the certificate, typically 2 to 3 percent.
Ask for certificates from three recent months, not one. A grinder running steady feed shows steady numbers. A terminal blending cargoes shows drift.
Truck, rail, load size, lead time, what happens when the grinder goes on allocation. A supplier with more than one source has an answer for the last one.
